UIDAI to Ban Aadhaar Photocopies and Require Registration for Verifiers

UIDAI to Ban Aadhaar Photocopies and Require Registration for Verifiers

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has approved a landmark rule that will require all private entities seeking Aadhaar verification to register themselves, effectively eliminating the need for physical photocopies of Aadhaar cards.

Under this upcoming regulation, entities such as hotels, event organisers, housing societies and other organisations that conduct offline verification must register with UIDAI before performing Aadhaar based checks. Once registered, they will be required to shift to secure digital verification methods using QR code scanning or an official Aadhaar application.

This step is part of UIDAI’s push for paperless authentication designed to increase data privacy, reduce risks associated with storing photocopies and minimise misuse of identity information. The system will also provide registered entities access to a secure API, enabling them to embed Aadhaar verification within their internal processes, even when network connectivity is disrupted.

UIDAI has already approved the framework and is expected to roll out the official notification soon. This is expected to significantly strengthen identity security, improve ease of verification and increase accountability among organisations handling personal data.

Conclusion
The move reflects India’s growing focus on responsible digital governance and data protection. By replacing vulnerable photocopies with controlled digital verification, UIDAI is setting a stronger standard for privacy, security and trust in identity management. It is a forward looking step that aligns with national efforts to safeguard citizens’ data and modernise public service delivery.
