Cyberattack Hits Two Delhi Hospitals, Patient Data and Records Compromised

In a major cybersecurity incident, two prominent hospitals in North Delhi—Sant Parmanand Hospital in Civil Lines and NKS Super Speciality Hospital in Gulabi Bagh—were targeted in a coordinated cyberattack during the night of June 10–11.

Initially reported as a routine technical failure, both hospitals later confirmed that the disruptions were the result of a deliberate hacking attempt. Following internal investigations, both institutions filed a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 66 of the Information Technology Act, which addresses hacking and data breaches.

Disruption of Medical Systems and Patient Care

The cyberattack caused major disruptions to essential systems. At NKS Super Speciality Hospital, electronic medical records, billing platforms, and appointment scheduling systems were rendered non-functional. Hospital staff were forced to revert to manual processes to continue patient services without interruption.

Reports suggest that Sant Parmanand Hospital experienced similar disruptions, though an official statement from the institution is still pending. Law enforcement and forensic cyber teams have confirmed unauthorised access to sensitive patient records, billing data, and administrative files at both facilities.

Growing Concern Over Data Security in Healthcare

This incident raises significant concerns about the state of data protection and cybersecurity preparedness in India’s healthcare sector. With patient data increasingly digitised, the attack underscores the need for robust security frameworks, especially under the purview of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023.

Cybersecurity experts have urged healthcare providers to strengthen their digital infrastructure and conduct regular risk assessments to prevent such breaches.

An investigation by the Delhi Police Cyber Cell is ongoing to identify the perpetrators and assess the extent of the data breach.
